Puccini celebrated in Damascus دمشق تحتفل بالموسيقار بوسيني
الأستاذ الدكتور صادق فرعون
Puccini celebrated in Damascus The Syrian Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO), conducted by Maestro Nahel Alhalabi with three guest Italian singers: Miss Serenella Fraschini, soprano, Mr. Fabio Andreotti, tenor, Mr. Alfio Grasso, baritone, and Miss Lubana Al Quntar, soprano from Syria, celebrated the 150th birthday anniversary of the great Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) at Dar Al Assad, the Opera Hall, in Damascus. This unforgettable event was realized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Centre in Damascus, Damascus 2008, Arab Centre of Culture, and Echo Cultural Society. The SPO was founded in 2006, first as a brass, woodwind and percussion orchestra but soon was enlarged into a full blazed symphony orchestra. It gave, so far, many concerts and will hopefully participate with its elder sister the Syrian Symphony Orchestra(SSO) in creating an active, competitive and refreshing musical life in Syria. The three guest Italian singers are well-known and established artists in Italy and abroad. Miss Lubana is also a well known Syrian soprano who studied at the High Institute of Music in Damascus, then furthered her studies in London and Maastricht and won many prizes. The Opera House big hall was full with happy and enthusiastic audience. The SPO, conducted by Maestro Nahel Alhalabi, accompanied the four artists in sixteen arias: eight solos and four duets. First Miss Fraschini sang "Un bel di vedremo" from Madame Butterfly, then Signor Andreotti sang "Recondita Armonia" from Tosca and so went on the exciting and dramatic gems of Puccini. Our Syrian soprano Miss Al Quntar excelled in singing "Si mi chiamano Mimi" from la Bohème . All items were received with high ovation but the duets even raised higher applause and cheers. Especially the two duets " O soave fanciulla" from Bohème and "Mario Mario" from Tosca aroused the highest cheers. Puccini's dramatic and colourful music texture left a deep effect on the audience. The time passed by soon and upon prolonged applause the guest singers sang two duets as encores. Roses were presented to the artists and thus ended a memorable music evening that will keep vivid remembrances in the audience hearts for very long. Sincere thanks are expressed to our guest Italian singers, to Lubana for her fine singing, to the SPO and its conductor Nahel Alhalabi, to the dear members of the Italian Cultural Centre and to all who participated and endorsed this great music event. Best wishes and long live Giacomo Puccini, a great and eternal giant of great operatic music, and similar wishes to the Italian, music loving, people and looking forward to more and similarly thrilling music evenings. Last but not least: Good wishes to the youthful Syrian Philharmonic Orchestra. Please go on in the path into musical excellence.
